THE THREE BEST WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR ROOF FOR WINTERS

October 2023

Winter is almost here. And it brings with it frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall, not to forget spring thaw. This season makes your home more prone to rain, hailstorm, snow, and strong winds bringing in thorns, twigs, leaves to more hazardous objects.

Climbing over the roof to fix it during harsh weather can be highly challenging for you or your roofer, so the most beneficial thing you could do is prepare your ceiling now. Thus, well-preparing your roof for these cold and stormy months is crucial to protect both the roof and your home from possible threats and damages.

To avoid any problems that might occur in the spring thaw, here are the three best ways to prepare your roof for the winter season.

  • Inspect and clean your gutters and drains

The first step in preparing your roof starts with cleaning beneath the house. The foremost thing you need to do is inspect and clean out your gutters and downpipes to drain off the spring thaw.

The second step is to remove any debris off Your roof. In the summer and fall, twigs and debris, especially leaves, can fall on your roof, which can eventually wash into your drains and downspouts, clogging them throughout the winter and disrupting the flow of rain and thaw. So, make sure the gutter and the roof are clear of debris so water and thaw can flow freely when the snow starts to melt.

  • Examine your roof for holes, cracks, loose, or missing shingle

Roof shingles and flashings tend to wear and tear over time. Check your flashing and edges of the roof, especially around the vents and any odd angles, to avoid leakages from the heavy snow and enable it to flow down the flashing properly. Loose and missing shingles can also lead to several difficulties that can be hard to deal with during the winter, especially when the damage is done.

One final visual roof inspection can catch any defects causing leaks or other damages. This inspection can save you the pain of water leaks during spring. Look for cracked or loose shingles or any penetrating nail heads. These nail heads, if neglected, could lead to loose roofs and act as a barrier for debris and not allow it to wash off the top.

  • Check your interior for signs of leaks and the attic for ventilation.

If you notice stains on your ceiling, there might be a leak in your roof. However, if you see any new stains during the winter, it’s not necessarily roof-related. Typically leaks in winter are caused due to poor insulation that causes condensation to build up in the attic.

The attic’s performance is directly linked to roof ventilation and insulation. An inadequately insulated or ventilated attic exposes the roof to harsh winter weather conditions. Leaving your home prone to water damage from accumulated moisture and also driving up heating costs. Therefore, it’s critical to maintain a constant airflow in your attic space to adequately heat and cool the area and keep conditions temperature controlled.

If you face any such problems during this season, we are available for your service. Give us a call to take these simple but necessary precautions on time and enjoy the holiday season without disruptions, problems, and roof repair hassles. We hope you have a lovely winter!
